I was groomed!
For many years I had a Morgan as my fun drive. It was a fabulous car, but my wife complained that it was ‘like riding in a coffin’.
Gillian Fawkes, of Area 4, was a work colleague and we often chatted about car stuff. The Fawkes’s were clearly having a lot of fun at AMOC events and, over time, Gillian persuaded me that I needed to own an Aston.
I was still mulling it over when Andrew Fawkes alerted me to a DB7 GT, whose owner, a Club member, had sadly passed away. Finished in Vertigo Blue, the car was registered in January 2004 and had three previous owners. I was not quite ready to take the plunge, but fell in love with the car and bought it.
That was six years ago.
Since then I have put 11,000 miles on the clock - bringing the total to just shy of 50,000 - and still grin like a Cheshire cat every time I get behind the wheel! My wife and I now attend as many AMOC events as we can. She isn’t a petrolhead but loves the social side of the Club and says the Aston is ‘much more fun’ than the Morgan!
We’ve had some fabulous experiences - a recent highlight was last year’s DB7 event, where Ian Callum and several Bloxham personnel kindly signed a photo of the car.
Andrew describes Gillian’s influencing technique as ‘grooming’ but, to be fair to Gillian, I probably didn’t need too much persuading…
My ‘wild card’ image was taken on an Area 4 visit to the Navy Wings collection at RNAS Yeovilton in 2019.
